Exciting Day for Snowmobiles as Access Across the Canal Opens

Mats are down and snowmobilers rejoice, as the Portage Lake Lift Bridge is now in place for crossing over the canal this winter. The span across the Keweenaw Waterway has been disrupted in the beginning of the snowmobile season by construction work by MDOT. Yesterday snow groomers laid out the path for sleds to cross the bridge for the first time.

Its, Its a long process. I mean we’ve got to put the mats down, then we gotta have the city of Houghton to deliver us snow. Thankfully they brought us the snow. And then we gotta build up all the snow. And take the PistenBullys, or groomers, to flatten everything. Then we go through with a machine with a drain. – William Kotajarvi, Keweenaw Trails Club Groomer

The Portage Lake Lift Bridge will remain lowered for the remainder of the winter. The trails club says that the traffic coming across the bridge often leads snowmobilers up north along the 230 miles of trails. And is an essential and exciting part of the snowmobile season every year.
