Across schools in the Copper Country district need substitute teachers. Becoming a substitute teacher in the state of Michigan is a fairly simple process. Next week ess will work with the Copper Country Intermediate School District to host a substitute hiring program. Area Manager and Recruiter, Jamee Gobert, says that substitute teaching can be beneficial to individuals interested in education but are unsure of how to get started.
“You pick where you want to work. And the flexibility is a great option for people returning to the workforce or starting. And then there’s something called STEM certification. That is an accelerated learning course that offers a professional certificate opportunity. And if you do it through ESS there are discounted rates. And that for if you wanted to make subbing more permanent.” – Jamee Gobert, Area Manager and Recruiter, ESS
Substitute teachers in Michigan are required to have completed at least 60 hours of college credits. But ESS does also help CCISD to hire paraprofessionals, and similar staff positions that do not require college credits. Gobert adds that those who take on these roles in communities serve the purpose of filling in gaps for local educators while out sick or away from work.
“We also find subs to fill in for paraprofessional positions like classroom aides. Kitchen staff, support staff, and things like that. And right now there is a huge need in both districts, Copper Country ISD and Marquette – Alger RESA. And so this event is to get the word out there. And get people in to do face-to-face hiring. A lot of the hiring in the last couple has been online, so this is good if people got stuck in the online process. So we want to be up there to answer all of those questions and help people through the hiring and training process. Even if it’s just to find out what’s required to be a substitute teacher in Michigan.” – Jamee Gobert, Area Manager and Recruiter, ESS
After completing an application to become a substitute teacher. Individuals will need to participate in fingerprinting, and a background check. As well as obtain a substitute teaching certificate from the state of Michigan.
“We have an awesome program right now, it’s called the Kickstart program. And ESS will help you cover those costs. The fee incurred by fingerprinting, background check, and teaching permit. And they will cover up to 125 dollars.” – Jamee Gobert, Area Manager and Recruiter, ESS
Next Tuesday ess will host the substitute hiring sessions at the Copper Country ISD building in Hancock. Sessions will begin at 9 am, 1 pm and 4 pm January 9th.
