Dry Conditions Raise Fire Danger Over Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is full of great times, cookouts, and bonfires, but with the raised levels of fire hazards throughout the state, the DNR urges individuals to be careful.

The lack of rainfall and dry conditions means areas even in the U.P. can burn.

People are the number one cause of wildfires, and the DNR encourages individuals to call 911 if there’s a fire that got out of hand.

According to the DNR, yard fires are the top causes of fires in Michigan. Fires can spread incredibly quick, especially if there’s a breeze that can carry a spark or an ember.

The DNR encourages people to have a hose nearby, to avoid making sparks on roadways, to not park hot appliances on dry grass, and to keep the fire thoroughly contained.

Check online to see if your area is safe to burn in.
