Downtown hotel renovation more than cosmetic tweaks

When the Franklin Square Inn makes its debut as a Hampton Inn property, new guests will encounter significant changes. Jennifer Julien says that parent company Hilton designs the hotel chain with upscale sensibilities in mind. The lobby ceiling is required to be a certain height, but the current building is cramped near the check-in at just 8 feet tall. Julien says that is one of three major changes.

What we did in the lobby is we took all of the guest rooms on the floor above it. And so the lobby now spans two stories high. That will flow all the way back to the waterside where then there will be a balcony off the back of the building, so you can actually eat breakfast on the balcony, and enjoy the views.

The swimming pool will get a view, as it is moved from its interior position on the ground level.

And the pool is going to be put on the water side of the building, windows to the water, which you know traditionally the pool in there has never had any exterior windows.

The last major renovation takes place on the top floor. Gone is the conference center, replaced by a bar location designed to lead to panoramic views of the waterfront and downtown.

It’ll have almost a 360 [degree] view and a bar in the center. The rest of the area that used to be a conference center has all become extended stay suites, and they are really gorgeous views. You can see the Ranger and Mont Ripley.

Julien says the decision to shutter operations and gut the interior helps to speed up the renovation process. The Hampton Inn is expected to be open before summer.
