DNR awards emergency grant to Schoolcraft Township

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is providing over 90 percent of the cost for needed repairs at Big Traverse Marina. Due to the emergency nature of the application, the agency has the ability to waive the standard agreement for a 100% match by the community. The project is estimated to cost $245,000 in total, more than the township’s annual budget.

High water levels have led to erosion behind the seawall, causing the sidewalk to become unstable. Debris has slid into the harbor itself and it will need to be dredged to restore the proper depth for boats trying to use the facility.

The DNR’s Vicki McGhee explains the work needed.

Driving a new steel sheet piling seawall, backfilling behind the sheet piling, and placing a new concrete sidewalk. Installing new woodposts and bumpers for docking, and cleats to tie to.

Schoolcraft Township Supervisor Joel Keranen says that the timeline is flexible depending on contractor feedback. A fall completion date would be ideal, but the job has specific requirements that not every company can meet. If the work wraps up over the winter or before boating seasons next spring, it may save the township some money at a time when material prices are already running high.
