Dingler’s First Homer Lifts Tigers – Monday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Tigers salvaged one win from their weekend series against the Giants, with a 5-4 victory yesterday. Dillon Dingler hit his first major league home run, and added a double. Matt Vierling also homered. Keider Montero allowed all four San Francisco runs over five innings, but Tyler Holton, Brenan Hanifee and Will Vest blanked the Giants on just two hits over the final four frames.

The Tigers take today off, and host the Mariners tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers’ five-game winning streak ended yesterday, with a 4-3 loss to the Reds. Joey Ortiz homered. D.L. Hall pitched into the fifth, and gave up three runs. Cincinnati scored the game-winner off Joe Ross in the seventh.

The Brewers host the Dodgers tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Clayton Kershaw.

Hall was brought back from the 60-day injured list to start yesterday’s contest. Pitcher Hoby Milner has been added to the injured list because of a shoulder problem.

Pitcher Bryan Hudson could also return to the team as early as tonight. He’s completed a rehab assignment after missing time with an oblique injury. 

NFL

The Packers opened their exhibition campaign with a crisp 23-10 victory over the Browns Saturday. Jordan Love made a brief appearance, and connected with Dontayvion Wicks on a 65-yard touchdown pass.

High School

Practices for high school fall sports begin today. The first local volleyball action will take place a week from Friday. The first local football games will be played August 29th. U.P. Sports Hall of Fame

Ten new inductees into the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame have been introduced. The incoming class includes…

• Barb Sickler, who coached the Lake Linden-Hubbell girls track team to a U.P. title in 1982, and also coached and taught at Gwinn and Munising,
• Olympic snowboard champion Nick Baumgartner, who excelled at football, track and wrestling at West Iron County,
• Basketball player and coach Jamie Angeli of Iron River,
• Basketball player and coach Rachel (Folcik) McClure, who led Carney-Nadeau to a state title,
• Women’s skiing pioneer Jeannie Thoren of Marquette,
• Lesley (Noel) Delvaux of Escanaba, who was the first U.P. softball player to receive a Big 10 scholarship,
• Dave St. Onge of Ishpeming, who served for 53 years as a high school and college basketball referee,
• Jeff Olson, who coached Ishpeming to three state high school football titles,
• Long-time cross country and track coach John Prokos of Escanaba,
• Multi-sport star Denise Porath of Escanaba, who excelled in softball, field hockey, basketball and golf.

The U.P. Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place May 19th at the Island Resort and Casino in Harris.
