A potential opponent for incumbent Republican Jack Bergman is in the Copper Country this week, hosting three town halls. On Monday night Dr. Robert Lorinser was at the Keweenaw Heritage Center, in the reception area on the lower level of the former St. Anne’s Church.
The crowd numbered perhaps 25, and Lorinser gave them the power to control the format. Many in attendance wanted to hear more of the family practitioner’s backstory. Lorinser talked about his time in the Foreign Service, using that experience as a counterweight to Bergman’s polished military background.
Lorinser still has to be successful in his party’s primary before matching up with the GOP contender. He has been hosting forums throughout the First Congressional District and says Democrats are using one criteria above all to vet their eventual candidate.
No topic was off limits. Lorinser fielded questions and spoke on energy, gun control, and abortion, among many others. The Calumet event was billed as a Keweenaw Town Hall, even though the village is in the northern reaches of Houghton County. Lorinser has a stop in the City of Houghton planned tonight and Baraga County tomorrow.
