Houghton County Sheriff’s Deputies were called out to a fatal accident involving a vehicle and a side-by-side Saturday morning on M-26 near Twin Lakes. At 9:40, an 86-year-old Twin Lakes man attempted to cross the highway on his off-road recreational vehicle from Twin Lakes Road to the dirt trail. A SUV traveling south could not stop in time as the side-by-side drove into his path.
The 23-year-old driver of the sport utility vehicle was not injured, but the ORV operator was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.
The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Superior Service, Mercy Ambulance, and the Elm River Fire Department.
