Dam Jam returning this summer

Houghton Community Broadcasting General Manager Jeff Harju and Josh Mortti gave a presentation about plans for Dam Jam this summer at Friday’s Calumet Township Board of Trustees meeting. After a two-year hiatus, the duo felt it important to remind members about what they should expect from the event.

Camping is a strong draw, not just for listeners but for potential musicians, says Mortti.

And for us it’s just a good selling point. At this point we’ve probably got $9,000 worth of music booked, right now.

It’s more of the rustic variety than recreational vehicles. Harju told the board that they weren’t expecting to provide showering facilities or accommodations for modern amenities such as a power supply for cell phone chargers and other electronic devices. They will need to clear a gathering with the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department, something they were successful with in the past.

Harju says that future Dam Jams may feature alcohol sales, but sponsorships are still being worked out on that front.

Copper Harbor Trails Festival, that’s sponsored by Bell’s. We had talked with management and ownership there of — they like sponsoring things like that. Because they haven’t signed on yet, we decided, especially with the couple year hiatus, that we’d just try to ease back in to what we were shooting for two years ago, and not try to do that.

It will be a “Bring your own beer” format again for 2022.

This year’s Dam Jam is set for Friday, July 1st and Saturday, July 2nd. Several trustees talked about potential improvements at Calumet Lions Park, including a new band stand in the works.
