The League of Women Voters of the Copper Country will host a once prominent state political figure Wednesday to discuss local redistricting. Changing the boundaries for the national and state level get most of the attention, but a new census means that counties are required to redraw the lines for their districts as well.
How the maps end up changing are determined by a five person panel consisting of local officials. The former head of the Michigan Democratic Party, Mark Brewer, will be giving a non-partisan presentation on the process.
Brewer is now a lawyer with the firm of Goodman Acker and says he will bring an analytical approach to what can become a political issue.
A link to the Zoom webinar can be found in the full press release below. Counties are required to have redistricting completed 60 days after Census data becomes available.

The County Redistricting process starts in a few months. This is not part of the MICRC mandate. How will your local county lines get drawn and who draws them? Will the public have time to study the maps and make comments? Get the answers to these questions and more at the League’s County Redistricting Forum (virtual) on Wednesday evening, May 13th at 7 p.m. Mark Brewer, Attorney and Political Consultant, will lead the discussion about what to expect and how you can get involved in redrawing the lines for our counties in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Mr. Brewer has participated in a number of programs with LWVMI and is well known as an expert speaker on Michigan election law.
