Council approves sewer and water work

A week removed from a special session to address the new pier, Houghton’s City Council looked at a different kind of water infrastructure Wednesday night. Improvements for both the water system and sewer system passed unanimously. The bills total a little over $1.5 million. City Manager Eric Waara says the outlay is less than it could have been thanks to funds earmarked for sewer work.

It is listed as $326,000, which seems awfully low, but we were able to get a significant amount of grant, at least towards the sewer portion of the project.

During Waara’s manager’s report, he mentioned that the float will be busier this year.

We’ve added some docks slips this year and they’re getting filled. Got rid of a couple transient slips that didn’t get used and turned them into rental slips. Also looking at some broadside slips.

A measure to consider altering the structure of council meetings and add a second segment of public comment failed four votes to three.
