Council approves Coles Creek rezoning

Houghton City Council voted in favor of rezoning a portion of land near Coles Creek, parcels B and C on the attached map, that is being sold to create a campground and vacation cabins. The change was needed to allow for the proposed use, including an RV park.

There were a couple of speakers during public comment on the motion, including an attorney for Derek Bradway, the man who plans on purchasing the property. She said that the new proposal makes more sense than what was rejected by the council earlier this year. It has the support of neighbors.

I really commend Mr. Bradway on working with the neighbors in the area on really making sure this use, of the campground, is an appropriate use in relation to the neighborhood.

And it fits with the city’s vision.

It is much more compatible than the B-2 in looking at the Master Plan. In fact, the Master Plan contemplates specifically a reserve zoning along the canal.

Resident Craig Waddell also spoke in favor of the new campground.

Following reports from City Manager Eric Waara and Police Chief John Donnelly, the council took up debate on the subject. The proposed rezoning ordinance passed unanimously.
