The area’s newest school is two months into its maiden year and Principal Steve Aho is happy with the progress being made. He said that the most difficult aspect of the Copper Island Academy launch was filling out staffing needs. Finding teachers has been a problem in recent years for all districts, but that is amplified when you are starting from scratch.
Aho says that he is proud of establishing work ethic as part of the school’s identity.
Other students have been building a chicken coop. Aho believes that the practical hands-on skills are just as vital as what is tested for via the M-STEP evaluations. The projects are part of the overall vision for the academy.
