Copper Island Academy celebrates Laskiainen

It goes by many names around the world: Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Pancake Day, or in parts with strong Finnish heritage, Laskiainen. A theme throughout is fattening food, one last celebration before the Lenten season.

Copper Island Academy figured out one way to burn off some of those calories. The school constructed an outdoor ice rink on its property earlier this winter and the sheet of ice saw some fierce three-on-three hockey action under clear skies.

Grades 3-5 and 6-8 were lumped into two separate brackets with a winning team being crowned in each. The berm of snow around the ice held hundreds of onlookers. Though the action was fierce, photos posted by the school show there was plenty of fun to be found as well. A link is here.

Congratulations to Ankle Breakers (3-5) and REB Loukus (6-8) on taking home the trophy. Both Copper Island Academy and Hancock Central High School/Middle School have constructed outdoor rinks for this season. Students helped to build and maintain the facilities, adding some nontraditional skills to traditional classroom curriculum.
