When Lake Superior was formed thousands of years a go by lava and glaciers, nature left behind numerous treasures in the surrounding earth. The Keweenaw Peninsula and Lake Superior basin are both must visit places for any rock or mineral collector seeking out a valuable gem, banded Lake Superior agate or just a cool looking rock. For those who consider themselves rock hounds, an annual event will return this weekend, the Copper Country Gem and Mineral Show. The event will include between seven and nine out of the area vendors who offer documented jewelry, gems and mineral.
During the event there are also various silent auctions and information about joining the Copper Country Rock and Mineral Club. Kids who attend the Gem and Mineral show will even have the opportunity to go on a treasure hunt, using metal detectors to hunt for copper and other minerals hidden away under a large pile of sawdust.
Today and tomorrow at 4 pm, the show will include a presentation from geologist and author, Nathalie Brandes, to talk about the geological history and journey Michigan took to become the rock hunting gem it is today.
The Copper Country Gem and Mineral Show is a three day event taking place Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The show takes place at Houghton Elementary school on Bridge Street.
