Copper Country Counties Transition to Spring Road Weight Limits Starting Tomorrow

Road Load restrictions will transition to spring restrictions tomorrow. Due to unseasonably warm weather county road commissions in Baraga, Houghton, and Ontonagon counties will reset load weight limits to spring restrictions. Semi-truck trailers and cargo vehicles will have a maximum axel load reduced to 65 percent of normal loads.

Single axel trucks are limited to 23,400 pounds and tandem axles are restricted to 32,500 pounds of weight. Tractor trailers with one tractor and trailer axles will reduce weight to a maximum of 35,100 pounds. While tractor-trailers with one rear tractor axle and two trailer axles are limited to 44,200-pound loads. Those traveling with a double rear tractor and trailer axle will limit cargo loads to 53,300 pounds.

No individual load limit signs have been posted at this time. Restrictions are subject to change based on a vehicle’s width of front tires. All rear axel combinations are assumed spaced between 3 feet and 6 inches and 9 feet in length center to center. Spring load restrictions are enforced by a certified weight-master and standardized scales seven days a week.
