Community encouraged to support projects when possible

Executive Director Kevin Store from Portage Health Foundation is excited for what comes next with his organization. In a wide-ranging Copper Country Today interview set to air this Sunday, he lays out a vision for the future that builds many of the recent projects supported by the nonprofit into a cohesive vision to make the area better. Store says the organization remains laser focused on local, and shares a conversation he had with a man where Store was able to show that all of his donations, previously going to national and international charities, could be redirected to groups that do those same functions, but for his neighbor rather than a stranger.

Store says everyone needs to make sure that as bonds are formed between the Portage Health Foundation and groups working on food insecurity, recreational opportunities, even emergency services, that they don’t grow dependent.

There is this, in some cases, a default, “Well, we’ll just ask them for that money.” It’s not just the easy button. We’re looking for how do we make real change? How do we make systemic change? How do we make long-lasting changes in our community? And that’s one of the things that we push are partners back and forth on, in terms of having that kind of conversation with us.

The same goes for those who give. Store doesn’t want to fall into a trap where everyone begins to think the foundation will take care of it. He mentioned that at least two individuals have gifted the organization over $1,000,000 and encourages anyone who is philanthropic to reach out to see if there is a way Store and his team can help direct those efforts in an effective manner. Copper Country Today airs on Sunday mornings.
