MLB
Tyler Collins broke out of an 0-for-30 slump with two home runs, as the Detroit Tigers edged the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 last night. His three-run shot in the fifth inning brought the Tigers from behind. Michael Fulmer gave up four runs over seven innings, and earned his fifth win of the season. Justin Wilson put two men on base in the ninth, but struck out Manny Machado to get the save.
That series concludes in Detroit this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Dylan Bundy. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera missed last night’s game with a strained left oblique muscle. He may miss a couple more games, but is not expected to be out long-term.
Jett Bandy’s RBI single in the ninth broke a 1-1 tie, and the Milwaukee Brewers went on to defeat the San Diego Padres 3-1 last night. Matt Garza gave up four hits and a run over six innings. Jacob Barnes got the win in relief, and Corey Knebel earned his second save. The victory boosted Milwaukee into first place in the National League Central Division.
The Brewers continue that set in San Diego this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Jarred Cosart.
Before the game, Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell announced that struggling starter Wily Peralta will be demoted to the bullpen. There was no immediate word as to who will take over Peralta’s slot, but Paolo Espino did not make his scheduled start for Colorado Springs last night, and could be called up.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, the Senators routed the Penguins 5-1. Ottawa leads the Eastern Conference final 2-1. That series continues at Ottawa tomorrow night.
The Western Conference final continues this evening, as the Predators host the Ducks. Nashville leads that series 2-1.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Cavaliers opened the Eastern Conference final with a 117-104 victory over the Celtics. That series continues tomorrow in Boston.
The Western Conference final between the Warriors and Spurs continues Saturday in San Antonio.
MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team has added two more recruits for next season. Carter Johnston is a guard from Beaverton, in central Michigan. Elisha Coleman is a guard from Minneapolis.
Keweenaw Guts Day
This year’s Keweenaw Guts Day will be held Saturday from noon until 4:00 at Haralson Field on US-41 in Calumet. High school players will compete for the Top Gun Award, given to the boy and girl who register the fastest throws. Experienced guts players are invited. Those interested in learning the game are encouraged to attend, and instruction will be provided, along with free Frisbees and refreshments.
