Update; Houghton Police say that temporary housing arrangements have been made for all residents of the apartment building as of 11am today.
The City of Houghton Police Department has put out a press release that clarifies some additional details surrounding yesterday’s explosion near Franklin Square. At 1:27 AM a call came in reporting a blast and possible blaze at 908 College Avenue. Houghton Fire was joined by neighboring departments, including from the City of Hancock.
The apartment complex had six people inside at the time, all of whom made it out safely. They had to flee in seconds, many escaping with only the clothing they slept in. All have been accounted for and two are believed to have gone to UP Health System – Portage’s Emergency Room for treatment of minor injuries.
No cause is known for the fire yet, but surrounding homes and buildings were evacuated and gas lines servicing the neighborhood were shut off, giving a potential clue as to what is thought to have led to the initial explosion.
Salvation Army, Red Cross, and Pigs n’ Heat were all on scene quickly to help meet the immediate needs of displaced residents, including footwear and pajamas. They are continuing to assist all eight individuals who called the complex home, including finding new living arrangements. Several of the tenants are Michigan Tech students and Public Safety is also involved. More details on how you can help will be forthcoming as soon as they can be verified by Keweenaw Report.
