City of Houghton explores sale of downtown office

Manager Eric Waara and members of the Houghton City Council discussed the possibility of selling City Center on Sheldon Avenue at Wednesday night’s meeting. It is only a thought exercise at this point, with no new location for staff being looked at yet. However, the idea was received well.

Currently Houghton employees only occupy the first floor. Midwest Loan is on the third and their lease was extended through December. Those kinds of agreements have become common in recent years and Councilor Mike Needham said that isn’t the most desirable spot for the city to be in.

Needham: We’ve never wanted to be a landlord, lets be honest, right? Waara: It’s not easy. N: No, it’s not. We did by virtue of the fact that we have a great big building here. I think it’s a great idea. Continue to explore it, come back with some more for us, that’s my thought.

Waara suggested that a RFP be put out to developers to see what kind of offers might exist from the private sector. Little downtown commercial space is available right now.

Other orders of business at Wednesday’s meeting included the formal approval of bids for two paving projects, both awarded to Bacco Construction of Iron Mountain.

A lot split of a parcel near Coles Creek that had already come before the Planning Commission was approved by the council and a public hearing was set for July 14th on potential rezoning that would allow the site to be sold and eventually turned into a campground with vacation homes as well.
