City of Houghton and Regional Snowmobile Clubs Need More Snow Before the Lift Bridge is Ready for the Season

Snowmobilers will need to change plans for what was expected to be the start of the recreation season. Typically starting around mid to late December, the Upper Peninsula’s snowmobile season is off to a rocky start with a lack of snowfall in the region. The city of Houghton has received inquiries into when the Portage Lake Lift Bridge may become available to snowmobilers.

The city says that while the bridge is in its lowered position for the winter, there is not enough snow to fill the section under the roadway. The city needs a minimum of 1,000 cubic yards to fill the bridge for snowmobile traffic. Houghton officials note that while it’s sad to delay the snowmobile season, the unusual warmth has allowed residents and visitors to continue some fall activities in the region such as hiking and mountain biking. As well as much the region continues to be entertained by several holiday-themed community events taken place in the past month.

Visit Keweenaw’s website offers a look at different events and recreation opportunities still available in the Keweenaw, including activities that don’t require the snow.
