Children’s COVID vaccination clinic today

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department is teaming up with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community to offer a youth COVID-19 vaccination clinic today between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM. According to last week’s COVID-19 update, Baraga County is trailing the rest of the region in vaccination rate for the age group in question, children between five and 11 years old. Keweenaw Report reached out to Chief Health Officer Kate Beer to see if there has been an improvement in the number since January 26th. She says current data is roughly equal to the 5.94% previously released. For comparison, Houghton County is over 17 percent and Ontonagon is above 22 percent for the age group. Beer says she does not know why the discrepancy exists.

The department will be releasing another COVID-19 update this evening, and it will show continuing improvement following last month’s omicron surge.

Looking at our numbers and I believe the case count is going to be half of what it was last week in total.

Beer says there is a caveat. It is unclear how many people are getting home test results only, whose positives are not included in official statistics.
