Chance to participate in Calumet redevelopment

Leah Polzien from Main Street Calumet was the guest on this weekend’s edition of Copper Country Today discussing how you can help play a hand in redeveloping the village’s historic downtown. The group teamed up with the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance for an informational meeting on Thursday, February 4th to discuss the creation of a new development company funded through “friends and families.” Polzien says nearly two dozen individuals took part.

We had about 22 people attend that online meeting. People who live right here, right in Calumet as well as people who own property in Calumet but live out of state.

Polzien says that Calumet is not Chicago or New York and you are not guaranteed stock market returns by being part of development in the area, but recent rehabilitation projects prove that area businesses will reward the work.

What I’ve found is people coming out of the woodwork for rental space for commercial businesses that is in good condition.

Polzien says that even with a recent spurt in activity in Calumet, 29 buildings have been purchased in the last five years, development is still generally confined to the Houghton/Hancock area.
