Across the Keweenaw Peninsula residents care for their neighbors. By volunteering in the community many people dedicate a part of their life to being there when the community needs them. This weekend the Copper Country Volunteer Firefighters Association will hold a VFIS Driving Training program. The program will address the attitude needed and responsibilities of an emergency services driver in the copper country. Instruction will also share information on what drivers do while not in an emergency.
Eligible candidates for the training program are a minimum of 18 years old and are members of a volunteer fire department. Trainees will complete a written and practical test to receive VFIS Driver training certification. The course is free, thanks to the Keweenaw County Fire Training Fund.
Anyone with questions about the program should contact CCVFA instructor Sean Jacques. The VFIS Driver Training program will take place at the Calumet High School on Saturday starting at 10 am.
Not a member of a local fire department, stop in at the nearest to your home to learn more about joining a fire department in the local community. Beyond emergency services and professional training opportunities, fire departments in the Upper Peninsula are regularly involved in community activities, helping put on fireworks displays, appearing at holiday parades, and organizing community events and fundraisers.
