Racers will soon begin lining up for the annual race along the Portage Canal. Canal Run, will take place next week, with runners chasing down 10 mile, 5 mile, and half marathon race times. A major aspect to the race, beyond promoting health and wellness, includes giving back to the community. Through Canal Run registration fees and event sponsors, the Canal Run Gives Back program raises funds for local non-profit organizations.
“The Canal Run Gives Back program is something that our committee is super proud of. So far we’ve given back over $20,000 to our community. Since this is such a community event, its sponsored by our community, and taken on by our community, and it’s a great way for us to give back. You know, we select agencies and organizations in the community that really make up our community. And this year its 31 backpacks, and we’re anxious to see what how much we can help support that organization.” – Angela Luskin, Community Health Coordinator, UPHS -Portage
This year the Canal Run will help support the mission of 31 Backpacks, an organization that works with local school districts to make sure at risk students will have food to eat over the weekend and even during holiday breaks. For those interested in registering for any of the races with canal run, racer info can be found online at canal.run. Registration will end next Friday, July 14th. Canal Run organizers will have a table set up for late registration and bib pick up during Key Ingredients in Hancock that night.
