Calumet Theatre shakeup draws public comment

Tuesday’s Calumet Village Council meeting lasted around an hour, with extensive public comment dominating the session. Many residents asked for more information regarding the recent theatre decision to temporarily close and perform a slew of maintenance improvements over the next two months. The announcement was paired with the termination of Executive Director Marlin Lee. In response, theatre staff have resigned in protest.

Calumet Village Manager Caleb Katz says that the Calumet Theatre is run by a private 501(c)3 organization and the relationship between the municipality and the nonprofit is similar to that of a tenant and landlord. That limits the amount of input the village has in regards to the theatre’s operations.

Katz says that the volume of questions being raised Tuesday night requires the village to conduct due diligence. That could include examining the lease agreement between the two parties.

It would depend on the lease language as well. We’ll have to have our village attorney look at that and then see if them not having shows or having staff, if that is a breach. We have to look at the lease and that is kind of what controls our relationship.

The planning commission meets tonight in the theatre ballroom, where rezoning will be the main focus.
