The new community garden in the Village of Calumet allows for the possible start of a new spring tradition. Over a dozen raised beds, fruit tree boxes, a fully equipped shed and more sprung up in the 400 block of Fifth Street over the summer. After an open house during Pasty Fest, the public has already begun reserving space for growing vegetables next summer.
Before that, though, the plan is for 4,000 tulip bulbs to be displayed in the garden in the spring. Main Street Calumet has launched a fundraiser to purchase the flowers. A link can be found at the group’s Facebook page. Tulips were chosen because of their early blooming period. Once their natural splendor subsides, in go the cucumbers and tomatoes at the garden. Executive Director Leah Polzien says she is really looking forward to what comes afterwards for the flowers.
When asked if she thought the tulips could generate visitors in the spring, Polzien said she hoped that would be the case, and it could mean the tulips become an annual tradition. It may not rise to the scope of Holland, either the Michigan or European variety, but a little more color come May after a long winter would be a welcome relief for many area residents.
