Calumet looking for new village manager

Former Calumet Board President Dave Geisler is in a familiar position again, serving the village’s government on an interim basis. Geisler says it wasn’t exactly the way he expected his summer to play out, but the departure of manager Caleb Katz for a job near Milwaukee, Wisconsin created a vacancy that needed to be filled.

Geisler says this isn’t the first time such a scenario has cropped up. Calumet has gone through four managers in the past eight years, by his count. Geisler says the recruiting process this time around will look a bit different.

This time the council decided to take a different approach, and they are using an executive recruiting firm in Marquette. The advantage of that is they will identify candidates, they will essentially vet the candidates, and present the best candidates to the council.

Once Stang Decision Systems has winnowed down the applicants to three, the final candidates will then be interviewed by the council before a decision is made.

Katz’s departure comes at a difficult time for the village. Calumet is still trying to secure funding to help clear the ruins left behind by the Fifth Street Fire and the Calumet Theatre Company is trying to initiate emergency repairs before reopening to the general public following the COVID-19 pandemic.
