Calumet hockey asking for assistance defraying travel costs

The Calumet Copper Kings boys’ hockey team is packed and ready to go, first to Marquette for quarterfinal action, followed by a potential weekend trip to Plymouth for the championship rounds. They are asking for local support to offset the travel costs associated with transportation, food, and hotels.

Athletic Director Sean Jacques says that normally the MHSAA helps out, but that’s not the case this year.

With the cancellation of spring sports last year and the reduction in the revenue for the MHSAA there, they would typically reimburse the schools for a little bit of their playoff expenses once you make it to a certain level. Certainly, if you make it to a quarterfinal or semifinal, there’s a little bit of an expense reimbursement, mileage or they might pay for one night in a hotel.

Calumet still has other winter teams vying for a potential championship. Jacques says past experience with the girls’ basketball team offers a guidepost as far as what the district will be on the hook for per program.

We were gone seven days, it was a $15,000 bill.

A link to the gofundme page is here. As of Tuesday morning, $2,000 had been raised, 20 percent of the overall goal.
