High School
In hockey last night…
– Calumet edged Houghton 3-2. The Gremlins took an early lead on goals by Dawson McKay and Ronald Olson. Ed Beiring and Brent Loukus tied the contest with a pair of second-period power play goals. Rory Anderson scored the game winner in the third period. Nick Voelker stopped 20 shots to get the win for the Copper Kings. Will Stier made 23 saves for Houghton.
– Bryan Lepisto’s two goals in the third period lifted Hancock to a 2-1 victory over Marquette Tuesday night. Spencer Samppala’s power play goal with 20 seconds remaining in the first period gave the Redmen an early lead. In the second period, the Bulldogs fought off a five minute major penalty, with almost three minutes of that at a 5-3 disadvantage. Lepisto’s first tally of the third was on a power-play at 5:30, the winner at 7:21 was at even strength. Both goalies played well. Cam Murray finished with 26 stops for the Bulldogs. Dylan Sibilsky had 21 for the Redmen.
With two weeks left in the regular season, Hancock and Calumet remain tied atop the Great Lakes Conference. Each team has one conference loss.
In boys basketball last night…
– Calumet overpowered L’Anse 72-48. The Copper Kings led from start to finish. Matt Ojala scored 22 for Calumet, and Logan Fish led the Purple Hornets with 11.
– Hancock fell to Bessemer 51-45.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 52-34.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City smothered Baraga 84-31. Devin Schmitz had 22 points for the Blue Bolts.
– Jeffers got past Watersmeet 74-64. Jaden Wood paced the Jets with 27 points.
– Chassell outscored Ontonagon 64-48. Abe Gochenback led the Panthers with 23 points.
On the boys schedule tonight, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City welcomes Watersmeet for a game that was postponed from January 10th. The JV contest will start at 5:00, and the varsity game around 6:20.
Finlandia
Both Finlandia University basketball teams play at Gogebic Community College tonight.
Finlandia University has joined a newly-formed athletic conference. The American Collegiate Athletic Association will include no local or regional opponents – the other schools are Alfred State, SUNY College of Technology, SUNY Canton, Mills College, Pine Manor College, the University of Maine at Presque Isle and the University of Valley Forge. The conference will hold post-season tournaments, and the champion of those tournaments be included in NCAA Division Three tournaments beginning next fall.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings entertain the St. Louis Blues tonight. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Mavericks this evening.
Keweenaw Bay Cutters
The Keweenaw Cutters chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will hold a banquet Saturday at the L’Anse American Legion Hall. Doors open at 5:00. Dinner will be served at 6:30. The cost is $50.00. For tickets, call Keith at 524-2247, or Nick at 353-7104.
Keweenaw TSD Rally
The Keweenaw Time-Speed-Distance Rally will take place on Saturday. The rally will cover about 210 miles of country roads in Houghton, Baraga and Ontonagon Counties. Registration opens at 11:00 at the Hancock Ramada. The first car will leave at 1:00. The final driver should finish around 9:00 in the evening.
The TSD rally is not a speed race. Drivers attempt to reach certain goals in a prescribed amount of time. Any licensed driver and any car may participate. For registration information, visit the event Facebook page.
