Calumet Girls Fall in Regional Final – Friday Sports Update

High School
In girls basketball, Calumet’s season ended with a narrow 50-47 loss to St. Ignace in the regional championship game last night. It was tight game from start to finish. Calumet led by a point at halftime. The Saints were up by five with less than a minute to play. A Hailey Wickstrom basket narrowed the gap to three with 11 seconds remaining, but the Copper Kings couldn’t pull it out.

In boys tournament action tonight…
– In Class D at Baraga, Dollar Bay and Chassell will tip off for the district title at 7:00.

In high school hockey, Calumet faces Flint Powers in the tournament semifinals this morning. Tipoff is at 11:00. Our coverage from Plymouth will begin around 10:30 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

MTU
The second seeded Michigan Tech hockey team hosts third-seed Minnesota State in the semifinals of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament this weekend. Games start at 7:07 tonight, tomorrow night and Sunday, if needed.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team plays at an indoor tournament in Milwaukee this weekend. The Lions will face Northland College tomorrow morning… the Milwaukee School of Engineering tomorrow afternoon and again Sunday morning… and Martin Luther College Sunday afternoon.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Eagle River Falcons tonight and tomorrow night. Games start at 7:30 at the Dee.

The Calumet Wolverines skate at Mosinee tonight, and DePere tomorrow night.

Jackson

NBA
The Detroit Pistons took advantage of a strong fourth quarter, and surprised the Cleveland Cavaliers 106-101 last night. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 21 points – 12 in the final quarter. Andre Drummond added 20 points, and grabbed 16 rebounds. The Pistons host the New York Knicks tomorrow. Tip-off is at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will entertain the Chicago Blackhawks tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Sanchez

MLB
The Detroit Tigers and the New York Mets played to a 5-5 Grapefruit League tie yesterday. Anibal Sanchez pitched two shutout innings, but gave up four runs in the third. His spring earned run average is 17.47. The Tigers will face the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the San Diego Padres 8-2 yesterday. Zach Davies threw two shutout innings, but left after giving up a home run in the third. The Brewers will split their squad for games against the Chicago White Sox and the Arizona Diamondbacks this afternoon.

Great Bear Chase
The Great Bear Chase will be held tomorrow at the Swedetown Trails. The Chase includes 50k, 25k and 10k freestyle and classic Nordic events, and a 50k skiathlon. Late registration will take place tonight from 6:00 to 9:00 at Calumet High School. Because of cold temperatures and predicted low wind chill readings, tonight’s Junior Bear Chase has been canceled.
