Calumet fire location treated as a crime scene

In a follow up to news first noted by Keweenaw Report, arson is suspected in the Calumet fire. The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office is warning people to avoid where the blaze broke out on Fifth Street Friday night. The area has been taped off and anyone found trespassing on the site or taking items will be prosecuted.

Sheriff deputies are being assisted by the Michigan State Police Fire Marshall and federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Calumet Fire Chief Jeff Kalcich said on scene Saturday morning that his department was leaning towards arson as the probable cause.

The sheriff’s department is asking you to come forward and speak with them if you were on or near the 100 block of Fifth Street on Friday night, approximately 10:45. You can reach them from their Facebook page or by calling (906) 482-0055.
