Calumet Falls in State Hockey Final

Warren De La Salle scored the first four goals of the game, the held off Calumet in the Division Three state hockey championship game 6-3 this afternoon. The Pilots’ first two shots of the game lit the lamp. Kings goalie Nick Voelker gave way to Alex Studebaker when De La Salle increased the lead to 4-0.

The Copper Kings began the uphill climb back when Brent Loukus scored at 14:57 of the first period. Rory Anderson and Ed Beiring assisted. Isaak Avery’s goal late in the second period closed the gap to 4-2, but the Pilots responded less than two minutes later to make the game 5-2. Beiring’s score at 10:08 in the third period again brought Calumet to within two goals, but the Copper Kings couldn’t close the gap further. De La Salle scored a late empty-netter to close out the scoring.

Thomas Hernandez of the Pilots had a hat trick and an assist for the state champions.

Preliminary plans call for the Copper Kings to arrive back at Calumet High School at 4:00 Sunday.
