Calumet Baseball Splits with Negaunee – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
– Calumet and Negaunee split a doubleheader. The Copper Kings dropped the opener 6-3, then came back to win the nightcap 13-3. Rory Anderson had two hits in the first game, and Jack Sturos had two hits and drove in three runs in the closer.

In softball today, Hancock entertains Jeffers.

Houghton swept the WestPAC track meet yesterday. The boys team easily outscored Hancock. Calumet, West iron County and L’Anse rounded out the field. The girls also took an easy win over Hancock, with West Iron County, Calumet and L’Anse following.

Two meet records were broken yesterday by the Houghton boys. The 3200-meter relay team of Seth Helman, PJ Donnelly, Nicholas Wilson, and Clayton Sayen set a new mark of 8:19.31. Sayen also set a new standard for the 200-meter dash, with a time of 23.05; .02 better than the mark Matt Wise of Calumet set in 2001.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers broke their three-game losing streak with a 6-3 victory over the Houston Astros last night. Daniel Norris pitched into the seventh. He gave up two runs – one was unearned – and left with the score tied 2-2. Shane Greene got the win in relief, as the Tigers scored twice in the eighth, and twice in the ninth on a José Iglesias home run.

The Tigers wrap up that series at Houston tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Mike Fiers. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Garza

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped an 8-4 decision to the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday. Matt Garza gave up three home runs, and left two runners on base when he exited the game in the sixth inning. They scored when Oliver Drake gave up a grand slam to Ryan Goins. Keon Broxton and Domingo Santana homered for the Crew.

The Brewers host the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Robbie Ray.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs, the Eastern Conference championship series between the Penguins and the Senators will wrap up with game seven tonight in Pittsburgh. The winner will face the Predators for the Stanley Cup.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Cavaliers could advance to the championship series with a win over the Celtics at Boston tonight. Cleveland leads the Eastern Conference final three games to one.
