The Calumet Copper Kings rode a strong second period to a berth in the Division Three state championship game, defeating Flint Powers 5-2.
The Kings got off to a quick start when Brent Loukus found the net just 37 seconds into the game. A second apparent goal 2:31 into the first period was waived off when officials ruled the puck did not cross the line. Powers tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at 14:18 in the first period.
Calumet broke the game open with three goals in a three-minute span midway through the second stanza. On a power play, Rory Anderson scored off a Jack Sturos assist at the 7:58 mark. Ed Beiring tapped in an Anderson shot at 9:23, and Loukus scored his second tally of the game at 10:56.
Powers got one back at the 10:53 mark of the third period, just seconds after a Flint power play expired. Calumet added an insurance score at 14:04 when Trevor Johnson scored off a feed from Sturos and Beiring.
Unofficially, Nick Voelker made 35 saves for the Copper Kings, who will face either Dearborn Divine Child or Warren de la Salle in the championship game on Saturday at 2:00. Hear the broadcast beginning at 1:30 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
