Busy fall color season wrapping up

From the top of Brockway Mountain you can still see splashes of yellow juxtaposed against the deep blue of nearby Lake Superior, but the color is fading fast. That has several Copper Harbor and Keweenaw County businesses taking stock of the busy tourist season.

Penelope Schumack from the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge says fall guests represent a nice change of pace compared to summer visitors.

Kind of different people than we saw during the summer time, they had different interests, which really kind of fascinated me. People were driving around and renting side-by-sides. I didn’t see a lot of that in the summer time, but once fall came we had a couple people rent side-by-sides here.

Lake Effect Bar and Grill General Manager Hannah Snow says there are still some outdoor sports enthusiasts in town.

We still see a lot of mountain bikers throughout the fall. They’re still coming and going, grabbing a beer in between trail rides.

Both say that it is split close to 50/50 between Michigan residents and those coming from other Midwest states. Wisconsin is obviously well represented. That could be changing in the coming years as Brockway Mountain was ranked one of the best scenic drives in America recently by Fox News. Snow says that guests through the summertime at the Lake Fanny Hooe Campground make the trip from as far away as Alaska or Florida.
