Bulldogs Claim Share of GLC Title – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
In hockey last night, Hancock clinched a share of the Great Lakes Conference championship with a 6-1 victory over Kingsford. The game was tied at one at the end of the second period, but the Bulldogs erupted for five goals in the final stanza to seal the win. Bryan Lepisto scored twice. The Bulldogs outshot the Flivvers 39-21. Calumet could share the conference title with a win Thursday against Marquette. We’ll broadcast that game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In girls basketball last night…
– Houghton shut down Hancock 42-25. Sloane Zenner had 15 points as the Gremlins close their regular season with a record of 19-1.
– Jeffers outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 77-41. Julia Nordstrom scored 36 for the Jets.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City smothered Republic-Michigamme 46-13.
– Chassell got past Ontonagon 48-40.
– L’Anse lost at West Iron County 65-51.
– The Calumet game at Baraga was canceled because of illness at Baraga High School. Because of the lateness of the season, it will not be made up.

In boys action last night, Ewen-Trout Creek downed Hurley 80-57. Jake Witt scored 24 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and blocked 11 shots. Austin Berglund scored 35 for the Panthers.

On the boys schedule tonight…
– Houghton plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Hancock visits Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
– Baraga travels to Chassell.
– L’Anse journeys to Ontonagon.
– Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Watersmeet.

The U.P. Varsity Ski Finals scheduled for Mont Ripley today have been postponed until Thursday because of snow conditions.

Richards

Finlandia
Both Finlandia basketball teams closed their seasons with victories over North Central University last night. The women’s squad built an early lead, then held on to earn a 64-61 win. Kelsie Richards had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Lions. Taylor Pertile added 16 points off the bench. The women’s team closes its season with a record of eight wins and 15 losses. Five of those wins came in February.

Geralds

The Lions men’s team defeated the Rams 83-74. Five Finlandia players scored in double figures, led by Terrance Fuller with 19. Marcus Geralds had 16 points, bringing his season total to 505. He’s the third Finlandia player to score at least 500 points in a season. The Lions conclude their season with a record of seven wins and 18 losses.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers visit the Calumet Wolverines tonight. Faceoff is at 8:00 at the Colosseum. The game is part of Hockey Week in Calumet, which opens with activities today, and continues through Sunday. Link to the full schedule through our KewenawReport.com Community Calendar.

The Detroit Red Wings host the New York Islanders tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons return from the All-Star break Thursday night at home against the Charlotte Hornets. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
