Around this time of the year, many groups will show their support for causes through their actions and donations. Recently employees from Breakwater Federal Credit Union in Houghton delivered items like coffee, or lunch to people in the community. But another delivery the credit union committed to this holiday season included donations to three non-profit causes in the area.
“So every Christmas we try to give to our community. So we went around one day and gave some people gas, lunch, and coffee. We went all over. We’ve also given a check to SKY and Toys-for-Tots as well.” Marya Julio, Consumer Loan Officer, Breakwater Federal Credit Union
Breakwater consumer loan officer Marya Julio says that it’s a great experience to work for a credit union that wants to give back to the community. The 2,000 dollar donation, says 31 Backpacks Vice President Melissa Maki, will greatly help the organization after recently finishing the annual winter break pack that sent meals home with students in the last couple of weeks.
“That is going to cost about 30 to 40 thousand dollars. So we will need to build up our bank account again. So that’s going to help out a ton. We were talking about how many students we service on average every week. And it’s about 450. At about 10 dollars per student, it’s about 4,500 dollars a week that we are spending. So this is a tremendous boost for us. And we appreciate that people thought so kindly of us to give us this huge donation.” Melissa Maki, Vice President, 31 Backpacks
Breakwater Federal Credit Union works with many individual members as well as non–profit organizations. Those interested in learning more about 31 Backpacks, or the other groups to receive a donation from Breakwater Federal Credit Union can find more information here.
