Matt Boyd tossed six innings of one-hit ball, as the Tigers edged the Minnesota Twins 2-1 yesterday. Boyd struck out six. Shane Greene, Kyle Ryan and Justin Wilson combined for two more shutout innings. Francisco Rodriguez allowed a run in the ninth, but was able to close the game out for his third save of the season. Detroit’s scoring came on a two-run homer by James McCann.
The Tigers host the Minnesota Twins again this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will start against Kyle Gibson. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers spoiled the Toronto Blue Jays’ home opener with a 4-3 victory last night. Keon Broxton and Domingo Santana homered. Wily Peralta gave up three runs over six innings, and got the win. The Brewers play at Toronto again tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Marcus Stroman.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons will close their season on the road tonight at Orlando. Tipoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NHL
With the Detroit Red Wings’ season over, a couple of players will address some health issues. Tomas Tatar will undergo surgery to correct a problem in his shoulder. Tatar is a restricted free agent. He should be recovered in time for the start of next season. Justin Abdelkader is scheduled for an MRI on his knee. He missed some time with a sprained MCL during the season.
The NHL playoffs open tonight. The Bruins will face the Senators, the Blue Jackets take on the Penguins, the Sharks meets the Oilers, the Rangers play the Canadiens, and the Blues take on the Wild.
NCAA
Michigan State University has a new head hockey coach. Danton Coles was introduced yesterday. He’s a Spartan alumnus, who has been a head coach for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program for the past several seasons. He won a Stanley Cup as a member of the New Jersey Devils in 1995. Coles replaces Tom Anasatos, who resigned last month after six unproductive seasons.
Trail Running Tune-Up
Finlandia University Community Wellness, Michigan Tech Wellness and the Outdoor Adventure Program at Michigan Tech will bring ultra-endurance athlete Heather Anderson to the Copper Country for a Trail Tune-Up event Saturday. Anderson is a Michigan native that has held the record for fastest known time on the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails.
The day will begin with an afternoon trail run led by Finlandia cross country coach Bridget Durocher and the cross country team. It will start at 3:00 at the Maasto Hiito chalet trailhead. Participants will move on to some stretching, sauna and refreshments at the Paavo Nurmi Center. The days events will conclude at Fisher 138 on the MTU campus with a physiology talk by Dr. John Durocher. Anderson’s presentation will follow.
