Boil water advisory in effect for Calumet and Laurium

Due to Friday night’s fire in the Village of Calumet, Michigan American Water is reporting that their system suffered from a significant drop in pressure. That has resulted in a boil water advisory being put into effect. Twelve departments responded to the Fifth Street blaze, utilizing hydrants at every available point.

The advisory pertains to Calumet and Laurium, but not for Kearsarge or locations to the north. Michigan American says that Hubbell and Tamarack City were not affected either, since they have pipes tapped directly into the reservoir.

Operations Specialist Misty Meneguzzo recommends that water being used for cooking or drinking be boiled for three to five minutes to ensure any potential bacteria is taken care of. The advisory is expected to last for 18 to 24 hours.
