Anna Clemenc, fondly known as “Big Annie” is considered a local hero, with June 17 dedicated to her life and her work in Calumet.
She is well known for leading the daily marching protests during the Copper Country Strike of 1913-1914, carrying a giant 6 by 10 foot American Flag down the main street of Calumet to demand fair wages, safety, and social justice for miners and their families.
She has been recognized as one of the most notable activists in the early development of the U.S labor movement who spoke out when women had no voice and no vote.
A local advisory committee that formed with the goal of raising funds to build a bronze statue of “Big Anni” in Calumet to commemorate this woman. It is not known yet if the statue will be the same as her 6’2” height, but the statue will be placed in Downtown Greenspace Project.
You can donate to the project on the Keweenaw Community Foundation website.
