Six food pantries in the Upper Peninsula are included in 110 pantries across the state benefiting from a nearly 250,000 dollar Food Pantry Grant Program. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Blue Cross Complete, and the United Dairy Industry of Michigan announced that 243,500 dollars will be used by food pantries across Michigan to improve access to healthy food including diary, fruits and vegetables. Of the 110 benefiting pantries, 73 focus on seniors. A 2021 Feeding America study reports that 15 percent or more of residents living in 25 different Michigan counties are food insecure, and the numbers are even higher for children; 12 counties in the study reported 20 percent or more of children are food insecure. Three of the six Upper peninsula pantries are located in the western region, Copper Country Angel Mission in Calumet, BHK Community Action Food Pantry in Houghton, and the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College’s Food Pantry in Baraga.
