Barnelopet this Sunday

The “children’s race” is back. Put on annually by the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club and the Sons of Norway, the 15th Barnelopet will happen this Sunday with registration at the Four Seasons Chalet in the Hancock Driving Park.

Wayne Stordahl says there are four different distances, depending on the age and experience level of each racer.

The younger ones who aren’t really skiers, or just starting, have the one kilometer race. Next one is a two kilometer, then there’s a four-, and finally a six- for the experienced skiiers who go down in the gorge, and come back up the side and the hills.

There is no charge for participants.

There’s no cost to the users thanks to a grant from the Portage Health Auxiliary.

Registration opens at 1:00, with races beginning at 2:00. The Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club hosts several events, but the Barnelopet has the distinction of being the only competitive race on the calendar. It is meant to highlight the 26 kms of trails making up the Maasto Hiihto network. The City of Hancock is an active partner in groomer and maintenance of the trails.
