The kids Barnelopet cross country ski race takes place this weekend at the Maasto Hiihto trails in Hancock. The race annually brings kids and parents together to compete in cross country skiing. The Bernelopet is organized by both the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club and the Sons of Norway’s Ulseth Lodge. During the past couple of years, due to covid, organizers have not been able to include some aspects of the race. But this year they plan to bring back hot cocoa and healthy snacking options for kids and parents as they return from the trail.
Registration for kids at the Barnelopet is free thanks to sponsorship from the Portage Health Auxiliary. The Barnelopet will award each participant with a special medallion for completing the race. There are various age groups and race distances for competitors to choose from. The race will begin at 2 pm. Organizers ask that participants arrive to the Maasto Hiihto trails between 1 and 1:30 for open registration. You can find links to print the registration form here. Racers will meet near the Chalet Parking Lot. Please contact the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club to reserve skis, as the group has a limited number available to those without equipment.
Contact the KNSC no later than Feb. 11th by calling Wayne Stordahl at 482-0292 to reserve equipment for the Barnelopet.
