The Copper Country’s residents have a strong appreciation for getting outdoors on the cross-country ski trails. From a young age, the community gets kids onto their first pair of skis. Often taking part in the annual Barnelopet. In two weeks the free cross-country ski event will bring dozens of copper country children to the Maasto hiihto trails in Hancock to enjoy up to six kilometers on the trails, including a trail section on the Swedetown Gorge loop.
Parents are encouraged to join their kids on the trails for the Barnelopet to make the event a special day for the family. The Barnelopet offers different trail course distances for kids to enjoy time on the tail to their ability, with 1 kilometer 2, 4, and 6-kilometer routes.
Those interested in participating in the Barnelopet but do not have their skis will need to contact the race director Wayne Stordahl by February 6th. The 18th annual Barnelopet kids ski race is sponsored by the Keweenaw cross country skiing fund, and the Portage Health Auxiliary, and is organized by the Hancock Trails Club. The event is free to all participants.
