Baraga County seeing elevated COVID activity

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department and Copper Country Strong have switched to a once-per-week reporting system for COVID-19 cases in the region. The numbers back up this approach outside of potentially Baraga County, where 44 people have contracted the virus over the past seven days. In Houghton, the number drops to 30 overall, barely four cases per day. Keweenaw County had zero.

To add some color to the Baraga County level, L’Anse area schools have 10 high school students affected by COVID-19, sharing a characteristic with the most recent statewide surge. Younger people are making up a larger percentage of the caseload. That has changed the lethality of the disease. The spring surge has been tied to less than half as many deaths across Michigan than last fall, according to Bridge Magazine. L’Anse High School is expecting to return to in person instruction on Wednesday, May 12th.
