Baraga County approved ARPA funds for the county trail authority and local first responders at last night’s meeting. The Baraga County Trail Authority will receive 20,000 dollars for taking care of administrative tasks on projects. And Baraga Fire, L’Anse Fire and Bay Ambulance will each receive 50,000 dollars for various equipment upgrades. Smaller fire departments throughout the county; Arvon, Skanee, Aura, Keweenaw Bay, Covington, Michigamme-Spur, and Pelkie, will each gain 12,500 dollars added to their budgets from the Baraga County ARPA funds.
Baraga County’s commission additionally approved the millage rate and apportionment report from the Equalization Department, as well as the annual mine inspection report. Steve Koski was added to the Baraga County Road Commission. Susan Samford will conduct the Baraga County 2022 fiscal audit.
Baraga County also signed a contract with Nasi Roofing for work at the administration building. The contract allows Nasi Roofing to move forward on purchasing materials. The bid for that project had been approved at last month’s meeting.
The board of commissioners went into a closed session to discuss details of the sheriff and correction officer union contracts, agreeing to a tentative contract when coming out of session. Alongside the union contract, the board approved a two dollar raise for sheriff deputies and correction officers that will start in 2023. Certified deputies will start at 24.90 an hour, and correction officers will start at 19.95 an hour.
