It was a bit of a late start this season as Keweenaw Bay stayed stubbornly ice free through December and early January. That has not deterred the Baraga County Chamber of Commerce, though. They are announcing their third annual Ice Melt contest. The group has put a drum out, visible from US-41 near Baraga State Park, on the frosty terrain.
If you can guess when it goes through into the water below come the spring thaw, you win 50 percent of overall ticket revenues. You have to be uncannily accurate, though. The Chamber wants to know down to the second when the drum will slip from its perch.
“Ticket sales will end on March 14, 2022. Tickets can be purchased at and returned to Indian Country Sports, Hardwood Steakhouse, Skipper’s Bar & Grill, Northern Oil or the Chamber office. Online entry options are available at baragaicemelt.com.”
Great Lakes ice coverage peaks in late February or early March. Lake Superior is below its historical average for this time of year, but ahead of 2021.
