Baraga County budget shrinks

Baraga County’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year will be slightly smaller than last year’s. At a special meeting last night, county commissioners unanimously approved a plan calling for just under $4 million in general fund expenditures. That’s $250,000 less than last year’s expenses. County revenues are also expected to fall by around $250,000. Once again, most fees charged for county services will stay the same, but board chair Bill Rolof says that may need to change.

I think we have to raise our rates on things. We’ve charged the same forever. The department has to get together and get it up. That would help us some anyway.

Commissioners appointed James Ekdahl as a Democratic party representative on the Board of Canvassers. They also approved a request for an additional part-time employee for the probate court.
