Baraga Chamber hosting second annual ice melt

Employees from the Village of Baraga carefully placed a barrel onto the ice of Keweenaw Bay Thursday, kicking off the Chamber’s second annual ice melt competition. Rigged to the drum are three watches and a clock. They’ll stop working when it takes the plunge in the spring during the thaw.

Tickets are sold at Indian Country Sports, Hardwood Steakhouse, Skipper’s Bar & Grill, Northern Oil or online. Fifty percent of the net proceeds go to the person with the closest guess as to when the barrel goes through. Participants have to not only give a date, but a time down to the second. Ties are broken by who submitted first so there is plenty of incentive to get your prediction in now.

Like most raffles, the more you spend the more guesses you’ll get. $5 for 1 Guess up to $50 for 20 Guesses.

Baraga Chamber President Debbie Stouffer says the community is trying to start its own tradition like that enjoyed in Negaunee.

Teal Lake, I believe it’s the Lions in cooperation with the Chamber, have done it for years. There are a number of barrel drops in Colorado.

If nothing else, it adds some “mystery and intrigue” once winter sports come to an end and before spring blooms.
